Cette superbe exposition met en lumière l’amitié profonde qui existait entre Giacometti et Beckett. Peu connue, cette amitié n’a pas entrainé d’influence directe entre les deux artistes, mais plutôt un cheminement commun. Ainsi, le commissaire a découpé l’exposition en cinq parties : la solitude, le corps contraint, la scénographie, l’empêchement et le processus créatif. Ces thématiques exploitées par les deux artistes, illustrent la proximité de sujets et la grande part d’intimité qu’ils partageaient. Nous évoquerons pour exemple les Trois hommes qui marchent de Giacometti, mis en relation avec un extrait de la pièce Quad I + II de Beckett ; comment mieux expliciter la manière dont le sculpteur et l’écrivain conçoivent le rapport aux autres ? Ils se croisent mais ne se rencontrent jamais, allégorie de la condition humaine, vouée à une irrémédiable solitude.

Cette recherche inlassable de l’essence même de l’expérience artistique aboutit à un principe phare : Faire plus, faire mieux, avec moins. Pour dire mieux, il faut enlever de la matière ; chez Giacometti, cela se traduit par des figures de plus en plus longilignes, affinées sans cesse jusqu’à presque en perdre forme humaine. Chez Beckett, ce « moins » se distingue dans ses écrits de plus en plus courts, ses décors scéniques de plus en plus dépouillés. Le but ultime de cet « imminimisable minime minimum » (Beckett, Cap au pire) est d’atteindre la substance même de la chose.
Si ils se nourrissent l’un l’autre, aucune trace écrite ou artistique ne les relie, excepté l’Arbre – aujourd’hui disparu – créé par Giacometti pour le décor de la pièce En attendant Godot de Beckett. Cette arbre, re-créé ici par Gerard Byrne en 2006, est présenté dans la première grande salle de l’exposition, pour poser le postulat suivant : nous savons qu’ils ont été liés, mais il ne reste que peu de sources physiques à ce sujet. Ici, le curateur a eut l’intelligence de ne pas chercher des sources « physiques » – photographie, écrits, etc. – à exposer, mais a mis en relation des œuvres très différentes certes, mais avec une visée commune : le sens de l’existence humaine.
